Virginia Systems Announces a
Cross-Reference XTension
For QuarkXPress

February 15, 2001, Midlothian, Virginia. This morning Virginia Systems unveiled
Sonar Bookends® Xref, a cross-reference plug-in for QuarkXPress. Expected to
begin shipping in late February, Sonar Bookends Xref is designed to make cross-referencing
quick and easy.

A cross-reference is the insertion of the current page number of an item, such as a table,
chapter, figure, or appendix, into a document to facilitate the reader finding that item.
The page number can optionally include a chapter reference. The following text excerpt
has two imbedded cross-references shown in bolded typeface:

"Refer to figure 10, on page 24, and also Appendix II , on page 164, for more information."

Anytime a document is changed, all that is necessary is to tell Sonar Bookends Xref to
update the imbedded page numbers. In seconds, all of the document's cross-references
will be adjusted. Even documents consisting of multiple files can be cross-referenced
by opening all of the files before updating the page numbers .

Sonar Bookends Xref uses a proprietary "labeling" system so that the cross-referencing
information can be entered anytime, even as a document is being written.

"Doing manual cross-referencing is such a pain, that we never put cross-references in our
own manuals. We decided to fix that problem," said Philip Van Cleave, president of
Virginia Systems. "We see cross-referencing as a natural extension of the automatic
index and table of contents generators in our product line."

Sonar Bookends Xref, with a retail price of $195, will be available for both Macintosh and
Windows. A free demo can be downloaded from Virginia Systems' web site at www.virginiasystems.com.

Virginia Systems was founded in 1984 and specializes in document imaging, text retrieval,
